Why hydrogen? We're developing hydrogen infrastructure and technologies to:

Obama orders more fuel-efficient cars by 2011
"It will help add to the pressure to put out cleaner vehicles of all shapes and sizes," including cars that run on natural gas and hydrogen

  • What is the octane rating of hydrogen?
Short answer: "130+" according to a study done by the College of the Desert and Sunline Transit Agency
  • Here are some other octane ratings:
  •

    Is hydrogen safe?

  • Like most fuels, hydrogen has a high energy content and must be handled properly to be safe. In general, hydrogen is neither more nor less inherently hazardous than gasoline, propane, or methane.

    Health and Environmental Hydrogen Facts

    • Hydrogen is non-toxic, non-poisonous and will not contribute to groundwater pollution.
    • Hydrogen does not create "fumes."
    • Using hydrogen in fuel cells produces only electricity and pure water.
    • Using hydrogen in common combustion engines and turbines makes them run more efficiently and would reduce air pollution compared to using fossil fuels like gasoline.
    • Well-to-wheels, producing hydrogen from some fossil fuels like natural gas and using it in a fuel cell vehicle will often result in fewer emissions overall than those from today's gasoline vehicles-even hybrids.
